A method of engraving in which the design is bitten into the plate with acid.

The plate is first covered with an acid-resistant resinous substance. The artist then takes a finely pointed needle and draws the design out of this resinous ground. The drawing instrument does not cut into the metal surface. The image which will print is represented by the areas in which the copper of the plate has been exposed. The plate is then immersed in an acid bath. The acid eats into the plate only in those areas not protected by the ground. The length of time the plate remains in the acid bath determines the depth of the etched lines.

We all fly with instruments. The altimeter measures height above a reference.... The aneroid altimeter uses a small sealed capsule containing air. As the instrument goes up, the air pressure in the capsule increases and by the design of the capsule, it is allowed to expand in a certain direction. This expansion is coupled by mechanical linkages to a dial display. The dial can be adjusted by a knob to read say height above sea level(QNH) or height above the field(QFE). This altimeter is mechanical.

The Plastic Water Sampler PWS features all plastic(PVC) constructions with a free flushing design by large inlets. The sampling tube is completely metal-free. The end stoppers of the sampler are connected by a strong latex rubber tubing. The trapping of the water volume is started by a release messenger sent down the suspension cable. In a skidding turn, the gyro precesses towards the inside of the turn. After return on the aircraft to straight and level flight, the instrument shows a turn in the direction of the skid. In a normal turn, the gyro precesses towards the inside of the turn. The precession error is quickly corrected by the erecting mechanism.

When power(vacuum) is first applied to the instrument, the mechanism quickly erects the gyro spindle to plumb-vertical in order to align the artificial horizon with the natural horizon. In flight, the erecting mechanism continually compensates the gyro for precession errors in order to keep it aligned throughout the course of a long flight. The design of the erecting mechanism is quite clever. In an air-driven attitude gyro, there are "pendulous vanes" suspended from pivots attached to the lower portion of the sealed gyro housing, one vane for each exhaust port. The vanes are positioned so that, when the gyro is erect, each vane half-covers its associated exhaust port. If the gyro tilts so that its axle is not plumb, the pendulous vanes shift so that one exhaust port is more-than-half-covered and the opposite exhaust port is less-than-half-covered. The resulting imbalance of discharge air exerts a force on the rotor housing at right angles to the direction of tilt, causing the gyro to precess to the erect position. As soon as the gyro is erect, the pendulous vanes return to a balanced condition to remove the precessing force. Pure magic! The erecting mechanism can erect the gyro quite quickly at initial power-up because the gyro doesn’t exhibit much gyroscopic rigidity at low rotor RPMs. Typically, the horizon bar becomes level within the first 10 or 15 seconds, and then its oscillations(caused by precessional nutation of the gyro) are damped out within a minute or so as the rotor comes up-to-speed.

The Toulouse Space Centre(CST) has become a unique technical and operational centre in terms of both its size and the scope of its activities. Working in partnership with French industry, the CST develops complete space systems right through to their operational commissioning(e. g. positioning the Arabsat series), contributes to instrument design and development, participates in science projects and leads research or application programmes such as Spot, Hélios, Télécom, Argos and Sarsat-Cospas on behalf of CNES or space users. The CST is also responsible for the positioning and station-keeping of all satellites in CNES's charge. Its capabilities in the field of satellite operations are so renowned that it is used by French prime contractors to orbit satellites for operators outside France. The Toulouse Space Centre also runs a major research and technology programme. Its many technical facilities are used to investigate and analyse new basic technologies and to design future space systems.

A linear accelerometer using a single-degree-of-freedom gyro having a pendulosity along the spin axis that is servo-driven about the input axis at a rate that balances the torque induced by sensed acceleration along the input axis. The pilot's eye position locator is a two-way sighting device mounted below the compass on the windshield center post. It is used to locate the pilot's eyes in the design eye position for optimum runway visibility and an unobstructed view of the instrument panels. The design eye position is attained in two stages. The captain or first officer centers himself in his seat in a comfortably slumped position. He rotates his head to face the locator and uses both eyes for sighting.
