[A permit is a] permission granted to an applicant(on a prescribed form) to conduct an occasional, specific activity for a fixed period of time, or in some cases to conduct a once-off or non-recurring activity, or in rare cases to cover special circumstances. Permits expire, whereupon a new permit would have to be applied for.... A licence is an authorisation granted to an applicant(on a prescribed form), allowing him to carry on a business on a continuous(subject to periodic renewal) or permanent basis and usually but not necessarily provides for the performance of more than one activity. Licences are valid until they lapse or are suspended or cancelled. 3, record 3, English, - permit
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The term "permit" is often confused with "licence", but important differences exist between the two. In a few dictionaries, however, "permit" is given as a synonym of "licence" or as a type of licence. Thus, although "permit" is usually translated as "permis" the context may require the French term "licence". 2, record 3, English, - permit

Il ne faut pas confondre les termes français «permis» et «licence». Le mot «permis» s'emploie obligatoirement avec un verbe ou, parfois, un nom signifiant une action. Ainsi, on ne dit pas «permis de chasseur», mais plutôt «permis de chasse», «permis de construire» et non pas «permis de construction». Par contre, «licence» n'a pas de telles exigences. Enfin, il faut remarquer que le mot «permis» employé seul désigne souvent le permis de conduire. 2, record 3, French, - permis

A lease may be defined as a grant of the right to possession of the leased premises for a specified period of time commencing either immediately or at some ascertainable date in the future and ending at some point thereafter. A transaction is characterized as a lease rather than a grant when the owner or the grantor of the interest retains a "reversionary interest". In other words, possession of the leased premises reverts to the lessor on the termination of the lease. In order for the transaction to be characterized as a lease rather than a licence, the lessee's possession of the leased premises must be exclusive. If ultimate possession and control remain with the lessor, a licence rather than a lease will exist....("Real Estate and Landlord and Tenant", 1983-1984, p. 334) 1, record 6, English, - lease

Record number: 8, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The term "licence" is not invariably translated by the French "licence" although it is in most cases. The reason is that in English the term does not necessarily imply a business or occupation as does the French :"driver's licence" and "marriage licence" are examples of this. One must therefore be careful in translating "licence"--its usual French equivalent is "licence", but in some cases it can be "permis". An important characteristic distinguishing "licence" from "permit" is the fact that the former is not issued directly by the government but rather by a competent authority or by local authorities, while any of the three groups mentioned can issue a permit. Also, the licence is usually granted for an extended period of time whereas the permit normally authorizes an act of short duration. For example, we say "driver's licence", but "learner's permit". 3, record 8, English, - licence

The marketing authorization must set out, inter alia, the name of the product, the pharmaceutical dosage form, the quantitative formula(including excipients) per unit dose(using INNs [international nonproprietary names] or national generic names where they exist), the shelf-life and storage conditions, and packaging characteristics. It specifies the information on which authorization is based(e. g. "The product(s) must conform with all the details provided in the application and as modified in subsequent correspondence"). It also contains the product information approved for health professionals and the public, the sales category, the name and address of the holder of the authorization, and the period of validity of the authorization. Based on the above information, the Commission is satisfied that the design and current condition of the MNR [McMaster Nuclear Reactor] are such that the MNR can be operated safely during the proposed licence period. With a longer licence term, CNSC staff recommended that the Commission accept a proposal from CNSC staff to present, at the approximate mid-point in the five-year licence term, a detailed progress report on the performance of the facility and licensee. 1, record 15, English, - licence%20period

license : A right or permission granted in accordance with law by a competent authority to engage in some business or occupation, to do some act, or to engage in some transaction which but for such license would be unlawful... Finally, note that in Canada the British spelling(licence) is used more often than the American spelling(license), although both are found in Canadian texts. 2, record 20, English, - issuing%20of%20licenses
