MICROBIAL CONTAMINATION [9 records]

Record 1 2022-06-29

English

Subject field(s)
  • Pollution (General)
  • Microbial Ecology
CONT

Microbial pollution is an environmental problem and during the past decades microbial pollution has been increasing and is considered an important issue in food security. Microbial pollution is a serious issue because it can lead to a wide range of health problems. A great number of foodborne diseases and outbreaks are reported in which contamination of fresh produce and animal products occurs from polluted sources with pathogenic bacteria, viruses and protozoa.

CONT

CONT

Concept that origin of fecal pollution can be traced using microbiological, genotypic, phenotypic and chemical methods has been termed as microbial source tracking. MST is a sub discipline of environmental microbiology that focuses on differentiating the sources of fecal contamination hitherto not achieved by use of by use of traditional indicators.

CONT

There are two different commercial wheat debranning systems, the Tkac (1992) procedure and the ’PeriTec’ process, marketed by Satake Corporation (McGee 1995). In both processes the wheat bran layers are removed by successive passages through modified rice polishers. A short conditioning period (3 to 5 min) is used to ensure that water penetrates into the outer regions only of the seed coat. Abrasion is used first in the Satake process, followed by friction, as in rice polishing. In the Tkac system the outer layers are removed first by friction passages followed by abrasion passages.

CONT

Research has shown that debranning prior to milling leads to improved baking quality and nutritional value, eradication of microbial contamination and the potential for creating value-added products.

Subject field(s)
  • Textiles: Preparation and Processing
  • Microbiology and Parasitology
CONT

Textiles can be endowed with antibacterial activity in a variety of ways. Soil-repellent fluoropolymers have hydrophobic properties which reduce soiling on textiles and, secondarily, microbial growth. Small molecules such as silver, zinc, copper and quarternary ammonium compounds show antibacterial activity. Silver-coated dressings have been used in wound care... Antibacterial gaents may be added to synthetic fibers in the spinning process, but they can also be fixated to supramolecular compounds on the textile surface. Cyclodextrins are ring-like carbohydrates which form complexes with ’guest’ substances. They can be used as transdermal collector systems in toxicology monitoring, but also to diminish bacterial contamination at sweat-prone sites(so-called odor-controlling textiles) or as antibacterial textiles.

DEF

CONT

Point detection refers to testing a sample that has been taken directly from the environment suspected of harboring the target agent. Needs in this regard include not only investigation of suspected sources of contamination but also monitoring the air/water systems in buildings for general pathogen contamination or contamination by specific biological agents. In point detection as in stand-off detection, many situations will demand neither exceptional sensitivity nor exceptional specificity. Assessment of the total microbial content may be sufficient to determine contamination and alert personnel to danger.
