Myra Levine confronted the difficulties that nurses had in accepting and using the term nursing diagnosis by proposing a new nursing term that described the scientific approach to planning and providing nursing care. The word proposed was trophicognosis. Its derivation is from the Greek words trophikos techne, which mean the "art of nursing" and the suffix -gnosis, which signifies "the knowledge of". 4, record 4, English, - nursing%20diagnosis

Among areas studied are the change of gene frequencies in nature, the operation of natural selection on genetic characteristics, and the occurrence of polymorphism in species in nature. Malignant catarrhal fever(MCF) is a often fatal disease of cattle and wild ruminants, including some endangered species. The disease is caused by a group of herpesviruses that exist in nature as inapparent infection in certain species such as sheep. In order to better understand the epidemiology of the disease and to control the disease, we used a more reliable serological assay(competitive-inhibition ELISA) recently developed in our laboratory to determine the natural infection rate in wild and domestic ruminants in the US. 1, record 12, English, - competitive%20inhibition%20enzyme%2Dlinked%20immunosorbent%20assay

As well, we are continuing to explore a new approach to subunit vaccine design introduced by our laboratory a number of years ago(see Carayanniotis and Barber(1987) Nature 327, 59). By conjugation of purified protein or synthetic peptide antigens to monoclonal antibodies specific for defined cell surface determinants in vivo(e. g. class II MHC), it is possible to induce an effective antibody response to the "targeted" antigen(for recent data see Skea and Barber(1993) J. Immunol. 151, 3557). We are currently using recombinant DNA approaches to "engineer" specific B-and T-cell epitopes into selected sites on immunotargeting antibodies. In addition to our work using influenza virus as a model, we are also studying conserved B-and T-cell epitopes from HIV in order to develop a candidate AIDS vaccine. 2, record 13, English, - immunotargeting
