DEF

Colorless liquid obtained by the addition of water to citronellol. Used as a fixative and a fragrance in perfumery for its sweet lilylike odour.

CONT

hydroxycitronellal has not been found in nature and is entirely a development of the laboratory. It duplicates with remarkable fidelity the odour of lily of the valley. When blended with other compounds, it imparts a floral note to perfumes which cannot otherwise be obtained.

DEF

DEF

[Diagnosis] derived from the nursing assessment that establish a health status profile for the patient and from which nursing interventions may be ordered.

OBS

Diagnosis : The determination of the nature of a disease or condition or the distinguishing of one disease or condition from another. Assessment may be made through physical examination, laboratory tests, or the like, and may be assisted by computerized programs designed to enhance the decision-making process.

CONT

Myra Levine confronted the difficulties that nurses had in accepting and using the term nursing diagnosis by proposing a new nursing term that described the scientific approach to planning and providing nursing care. The word proposed was trophicognosis. Its derivation is from the Greek words trophikos techne, which mean the "art of nursing" and the suffix -gnosis, which signifies "the knowledge of".

English

Subject field(s)
  • Genetics
DEF

The study of the genetics and ecology of local races and distinct species.

CONT

An essential component of population ecology is the study of population genetics(ecological genetics), which deals with the behaviour of genes in natural populations. Among areas studied are the change of gene frequencies in nature, the operation of natural selection on genetic characteristics, and the occurrence of polymorphism in species in nature. These problems are studied in theoretical model systems, in the laboratory, and in field populations.

DEF

The environment of a very small, specific area.

CONT

Theoretically, all sandfly species are able to be colonized given appropriate temperature, humidity and media resembling the natural conditions... However, some species though reared through at least one generation, have not yet been colonized. Presumably, unknown factors that are not mimicked in the laboratory, and reflect the micro-environment of the species in nature have limited the ability to propagate these species.

The objective of the Microgravity Acceleration Measurement System(MAMS) is to measure and report vibratory and quasi-steady acceleration within the United States Laboratory Module on the International Space Station. Vibratory acceleration, produced by mechanical equipment and crew activity, has an oscillatory nature with a frequency greater than 1 Hz.

CONT

... the Microgravity Mode ensures that ... the vibratory acceleration levels will not be exceeded for 50% of the International Standard Payload Rack locations within the European Columbus, Destiny and Japanese Kibo laboratories for at least 30 days continuously, on six occasions each year.

Malignant catarrhal fever(MCF) is a often fatal disease of cattle and wild ruminants, including some endangered species. The disease is caused by a group of herpesviruses that exist in nature as inapparent infection in certain species such as sheep. In order to better understand the epidemiology of the disease and to control the disease, we used a more reliable serological assay(competitive-inhibition ELISA) recently developed in our laboratory to determine the natural infection rate in wild and domestic ruminants in the US.

As well, we are continuing to explore a new approach to subunit vaccine design introduced by our laboratory a number of years ago(see Carayanniotis and Barber(1987) Nature 327, 59). By conjugation of purified protein or synthetic peptide antigens to monoclonal antibodies specific for defined cell surface determinants in vivo(e. g. class II MHC), it is possible to induce an effective antibody response to the "targeted" antigen(for recent data see Skea and Barber(1993) J. Immunol. 151, 3557). We are currently using recombinant DNA approaches to "engineer" specific B-and T-cell epitopes into selected sites on immunotargeting antibodies. In addition to our work using influenza virus as a model, we are also studying conserved B-and T-cell epitopes from HIV in order to develop a candidate AIDS vaccine.
