Decided at the Summit held in Lusaka, July 2001. The AU [African Union] came into force July 9, 2002. The AU is the principal organization for the promotion of socioeconomic integration across the African continent. It includes 53 African countries as member states.

The Organization of African Unity was established on May 25, 1963, at Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and the Charter of the Organization was signed on that occasion by Heads of State and Government of 32 independent African States.
