Subject field(s)
  • Surveillance, Detection and Reconnaissance (Military)
  • Intelligence (Military)
CONT

The PSS are used for two distinct purposes: the first purpose is the collection of information for developing intelligence for use in future operations, and the second purpose is providing SA [situational awareness] for coordinating force protection against attacks.

OBS

There are two primary types of PSS :[persistent surveillance towers(PST) and persistent threat detection systems(PTDS) ]. Basically, these systems elevate a sensor package through the use of either towers or balloons.

The Surface Science Package consists of nine independent sensor subsystems with the primary aim of characterising Titan's surface at the end of Huygens’ descent through Titan's atmosphere. In addition, many useful atmospheric measurements will be performed during the descent phase. Seven sensors are mounted inside or on the lower rim of a cavity in the Probe's foredome, and are thus exposed to Titan atmosphere or surface material. Two sensors which do not require direct exposure to the atmosphere or surface are mounted on the electronics box inside the descent module.

The FIR features a large user-configurable volume for experiments. The volume resembles a laboratory optics bench. An experiment can be built up on the bench from components, or it can be built up on the bench from components, or it can be attached as a self-contained package, or a combination. The FIR provides data acquisition and control, sensor interfaces, laser and white light sources, advanced imaging capabilities, power, cooling, and other resources.

CONT

The powered racks are called the Fluids Integrated Rack (FIR), Combustion Integrated Rack (CIR), and Shared Accommodations Rack (SAR). The combustion and fluids disciplines share racks and mutually necessary hardware within FCF to dramatically reduce cost and effectively use ISS resources.

CONT

The basic attitude sensor was the three-gyro inertial reference package. It contained two air-tight integrating gyro units to sense pitch and yaw, and one miniature integrating gyro unit to sense roll. The pitch and roll gyros were torqued by signals obtained by two Barnes mod IIA infrared horizon sensors. Gyrocompassing oriented the vehicle to an orbit plane yaw reference by detecting a component of the programmed pitch rate through the roll horizon sensor. The geocentric pitch rate(typically 4 deg/min, for a low-altitude orbit) was programmed as a constant torque to the pitch gyro. This pitch component, if a yaw error was present, would be sensed differentially when compared with the roll components of the two horizon-sensor heads. The differential would be seen as a function of yaw error.

CONT

During heading align, the rotor of the resolver is positioned so that it transforms the N-S and E-W liquid level signals into pitch and roll components which are referenced to heading. The pitch component is amplified, demodulated and summed with amplified and demodulated feedback signals from the VG [vertical gyro] roll and pitch pickoffs and the pitch synchro. The combined signal is then modulated, amplified and converted to DC [direct current] to drive the platform pitch gimbal torque motor until the input signals are nulled.

CONT

ACMRI has four basic sub-systems. First is a sidewinder-shaped external pod which attaches to the aircraft's missile mounting rack and contains instrumentation independent of the aircraft's own systems to measure altitude, airspeed, Mach number, angle of attack and sideslip, plus a compact inertial sensor which measures pitch, roll, heading and acceleration/deceleration. The instrumentation package... also contains a transponder-like radio link which transmits all this information down on command from the second sub-system, the ground tracking station network... the third sub-system-the Control and Computation facility... precise aircraft position determination, and data formatting prior to reaching the fourth... sub-system... the Display and Debriefing Sub-system.
