The largest city of the province of Manitoba and its capital, located at the confluence(the forks) of the Red River and the Assiniboine River. The area attracted fur traders as early as 1738, when Pierre Gaultier de La Vérendrye built Fort Rouge at The Forks, where nomadic native peoples had been meeting for thousands of years. Other activities in the area were taking place around Fort Gibraltar and Fort Garry, the latter being a Hudson's Bay Company(HBC) post established in 1822. Severe flood damage in 1826 prompted the construction of a new post, Lower Fort Garry, 32 km downriver. In 1836, however, in order to facilitate the general administrative and supply need of the settlement, the HBC returned to the forks and built a new post, Upper Fort Garry, near the old site. The nucleus of the future city was related around a general store built by Henry McKenney in 1862 at the corner of Portage and Main in present-day Winnipeg. Until the incorporation of Winnipeg as a city in 1873, the settlement around Upper Fort Garry remained a relatively unimportant part of the larger Red River Colony. With the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1885, Winnipeg was launched into a period of growth and prosperity, becoming the wholesale, administrative and financial centre of the West by 1911. But the General Strike of 1919 and the Great Depression of 1929 plunged the city into a sharp decline, until World War II lifted the city out of that depression. In 1960, the Metropolitan Winnipeg Act created a new alignment of seven cities, five suburban municipalities and one town; the Metropolitan Corporation of Greater Winnipeg was given great powers to solve regional problems, which made many municipalities unhappy. In 1972, Winnipeg and surrounding municipalities were unified into one city, dubbed "Unicity, "which included the large concentration of Francophones from St-Boniface. In 1992, the provincial government further amended The City of Winnipeg Act to redefine the city's political structure. 2, record 3, English, - Winnipeg

There seems to be confusion as to the location of what is known as "Fort Garry," but sources locate it at the confluence of Red River and Assiniboine River known as "The Forks": "La Vérendrye built "Fort Rouge" at The Forks in 1738." Later, Fort Garry was built there and, after the flood, Lower Fort Garry was established 32 km downstream. When they returned to rebuild the establishment at The Forks, they named it "Upper Fort Garry" to distinguish it from "Lower Fort Garry," which explains why "Fort Garry" and "Upper Fort Garry" (and not "Lower Fort Garry") are historic designations of what is now the city of Winnipeg. 2, record 3, English, - Winnipeg

2, record 3, French, - Winnipeg

Atomic structure and properties... A more meaningful definition of "atom" can be made in terms of the internal structure, which has been well understood at least since 1927. In these terms the atom is the unit of matter that contains a small, dense, positively charged nucleus surrounded by sufficient negative electrons to make the whole electrically neutral. Structure. All atoms are about the same size, and this fact is a clue to the nature of their structure. The atomic diameter is about 2 X 10[ superscript]-8 cm(2 hundred-millionths of a centimeter). Since this is only 1/1000 of the wavelength of visible light, atoms cannot be seen in the ordinary sense, even with microscope. 3, record 8, English, - atomic%20structure

3, record 8, French, - structure%20de%20l%27atome

What distinguish city from village are mainly two facts. The first of these is the presence of an organized social core, around which the whole structure of the community coheres. If this nucleation may begin in the village stage, as remains of temples seem to indicate, there is a general shift of household occupations and rituals into specialized collective institutions, part of the intensified social division of labor brought in with civilization itself. But, from the standpoint of the city's relation to the earth, the important point to notice is that, in this social core or nucleus, the sharpest departures from the daily habits and the physical structure of the village take place. 2, record 11, English, - social%20core
