La thérapie humaniste est associée au mouvement du potentiel humain qui fut à son apogée aux États-Unis entre 1960 et 1980. Née du désir de changement de psychanalystes déçus et d'anthropologues sans préjugés, elle avait pour ambition de développer une écologie de l'esprit humain et cherchait à découvrir les moyens permettant aux individus de développer une personnalité et un style de vie sains. Elle s'est aussi particulièrement intéressée aux processus de communication et de prise de conscience des émotions.
