When the small spouts were introduced, the principal benefit of switching from a 7/16'' to a 5/16'' or smaller hole was thought to be a reduction in damage to the tree.

Il existe deux types de chalumeaux, le chalumeau standard d'un diamètre de 7/16 po et les chalumeaux à diamètre réduit. Les chalumeaux à diamètre réduit auraient l'avantage de préserver un meilleur niveau de vide dans le réseau de collecte, et ainsi produire un aussi bon rendement sinon un rendement supérieur à celui du chalumeau standard, même si l'entaille est plus petite.
