Reacción de lucha o huida. Se manifiesta cuando el individuo enfrenta un peligro grave, inminente. En esta circunstancia, el cerebro del sujeto inmediatamente envía un mensaje bioquímico(neurotransmisor) que provoca la liberación de catecolaminas : hormonas tales como la adrenalina y la noradrenalina, para dar la señal de alarma al sujeto. Estas catecolaminas provocan la descarga inmediata de grasa y azúcares que vuelcan inmediatamente en su sangre para proveerle una rápida inyección de energía. Aumenta su respiración anticipándose al aumento del requerimiento de oxígeno y para el transporte de ese oxígeno extra se incrementa su presión arterial y frecuencia cardíaca. Cuando pasa el peligro, el organismo vuelve a la normalidad paulatinamente.
