In general, however, asynchronous requests should be preferred to synchronous requests for performance reasons. Synchronous requests block the execution of code which creates "freezing" on the screen and an unresponsive user experience.

Une requête asynchrone provoque une interruption du programme Javascript tant qu'elle n'est pas traitée alors qu'au contraire une requête asynchrone laisse le programme continuer son exécution dès qu'elle est lancée. Le fait de lancer une requête synchrone au milieu d'un ensemble de requêtes asynchrones en cours revient à faire une requête prioritaire, puisque c'est son achèvement qui provoque la continuation de l'exécution du programme.
