Modelo desarrollado en los años 70 por el profesor de Stanford Bill Sharpe que explica la relación entre el riesgo y el rendimiento futuro de los valores. Se basa en algunos supuestos simplificadores sobre la aversión al riesgo y un mercado idealizado. El riesgo de un título-valor se divide en dos partes : el riesgo sistemático común a todos los valores en el mercado, y el riesgo no sistemático, que es único para un valor en particular. Cuanto mayor sea el riesgo sistemático(medido por el coeficiente beta), tanto mayor será la tasa esperada de rendimiento de un título(que consiste en la tasa de rendimiento sin riesgo, más una prima de riesgo). Esta relación es conocida como la línea de mercado de capital.
