Les termes «blocage» et «obstruction» sont très rapprochés. L'obstruction (en anglais, «blocking») semble cependant constituer une infraction aux règles, contrairement à l'écran (ou blocage), qui est une manœuvre tout à fait conforme aux règles; obstruction : le fait d'empêcher un adversaire de passer alors qu'il n'a pas le ballon et de provoquer ainsi un contact personnel.
