Les paramyxovirus possèdent tous une affinité pour les récepteurs mucoprotéiques des épithéliums respiratoires et comportant un acide ribonucléique monocaténaire, une nucléocapside à symétrie hélicoïdale, et une enveloppe à la surface de laquelle se trouvent des projections, parmi lesquelles les unes constituent l'hemagglutinine provoquant l'agglutination de certaines hématies, et les autres la neuraminidase, enzyme permettant l'élution de l'hémagglutinine. 2, record 1, French, - paramyxovirus

Ils se distinguent des orthomyxovirus (Myxovirus influenzae A, B et C) par le diamètre de leur nucléocapside (18 mu au lieu de 9), leur taille en général plus grande, leur aptitude à produire dans les cellules infectées des inclusions cytoplasmiques éosinophiles.
