A gas emitted by radioactive material in the Earth's crust and forming a minute constituent of the air near the ground.

Radon [is a] highly radioactive inert gas occurring in nature as radon-222, a decay daughter in the radioactive disintegration of uranium 238. It is an alpha particle emitter, having a half-life of 3.8 days and is a considerable hazard to those engaged in uranium mining, as its decay daughters are, too, radioactive.
