When the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) was formed in 1948, the initial purpose was to observe the truce established in Palestine between the newly created state of Israel and its Arab neighbours. UNTSO currently assists other UN missions in the Middle East to monitor a number of truces and ceasefire arrangements. Le but premier de l'Organisme des Nations Unies chargé de la surveillance de la trève, établie en 1948, était d’observer la trêve établie en Palestine entre l'État nouvellement créé d’Israël et ses voisins arabes. The Lebanese Civil War broke out in 1975, and in the chaos that ensued the Palestinian Liberation Organization launched a series of raids against northern Israel. This led the Israelis to retaliate by invading southern Lebanon.
