L’origine du break dancing : les gangs, aux États-Unis, fatiguées de se battre, s’accordent une trève (break) et tiennent un concours de danse pour déterminer quel groupe a les meilleurs danseurs. (Georges-Hébert Germain à l’émission «Coup d’œil» du 8 février 1984, Radio-Canada.) Les séquences retransmises lors de cette émission nous ont montré un (ou des) danseur(s) évoluant sur place, les spectateurs faisant cercle autour de lui. Il se meut rapidement, d’une contorsion à l’autre, pivotant tantôt sur une main ou un coude comme s’il était d’un banc de piano, tantôt le faisant sur un pied, le reste du tronc enroulé autour de la jambe servant de pivot. L’exécution demande l’habileté et la flexibilité d’un gymnaste. Il faut parier que tout comme le rock, le give et le twist, le break dancing ou break dance, ou tout simplement «le break», conservera ce nom dans toutes les langues.
