Comoro Islands: An archipelago or group of islands in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and Mozambique. On three of its four main islands is the Islamic Federal Republic of the Comoros, and on the fourth, the French Overseas Territory of Mayotte. The main islands are Ngazidja (Grande Comore), Ndzouani (Anjouan), Moili (Mohéli), and Mayotte (containing the then capital, Dzaoudzi). All the islands except Mayotte voted to become independant (1974) [with Moroni, on Grande Comore Island, as the capital] and unilaterally declared independance (1975). L’occupation officielle [de l’île] par la France a lieu en juin 1843. L’ensemble de l’archipel des Comores devient colonie française en 1912 et est rattaché à Madagascar jusqu’en 1946. Il acquiert alors l’autonomie administrative et choisit au référendum de 1958 le statut de territoire d’outre-mer. Lorsque la population de l’archipel est consultée le 22 décembre 1974 au sujet de l’indépendance, à Mayotte, 64 % des voix exprimées s’y montrent hostiles. Lors du référendum du 8 février 1976, 99,4 % des suffrages exprimés demandent le maintien de l’île au sein de la République française. Lors du scrutin du 11 avril, 79,60 % des Mahorais se prononcent pour la départementalisation immédiate.
