Pitons (or "pins", or "pegs") are steel devices, usually spike-shaped, which are hammered into cracks [in the rock] to secure anchors. The shapes are many, but every modern piton has an eye [or an eye and ring] through which a carabiner is clipped. 3, record 2, English, - rock%20piton

Pitons may be crudely described as metal spikes which are pounded into cracks in the rock ... Until 1960 most pitons were made of soft iron ... which would bend to fit the crack into which it was driven ... Technical climbing ... is a rather loose term, because of variability of style and capability among climbers, but it makes a very useful distinction. Technical routes are those requiring the hardware of modern climbing and the ability to use it. Technical climbing is distinguished from classical techniques relying mainly on ice axes, threading the rope behind gendarmes, and the motto that in really exposed places, "The leader must not fall". In general, technical routes are those classified as fifth and sixth class. 1, record 5, English, - technical%20climbing
