On peut utiliser des membranes semi-perméables présentant une perméabilité sélective vis-à-vis des gaz rares. De très nombreux matériaux ont été étudiés. Citons en particulier des alliages d'argent-palladium, le verre, la silice, le caoutchouc siliconé, différents polymères (polyéthylène, polypropylène, mylar, etc.). On peut ainsi réaliser une cascade de barrières de diffusion fonctionnant suivant un principe analogue à celui utilisé pour l'enrichissement isotopique de l'uranium par diffusion gazeuse.
