Il existe une réaction nucléaire qui entre en compétition avec la radioactivité. Il s'agit de la capture électronique. Elle est un peu analogue à cette dernière dans la mesure où un proton du noyau est transformé en un neutron, cependant il n'y a émission que d'un neutrino et pas de positon. Un électron de la couche la plus interne de l'atome peut pénétrer dans le noyau et interagir avec un proton pour former un neutron et un neutrino qui est expulsé du noyau.
