[...] on appelle capture fertile, une capture neutronique par un noyau et qui conduit à un noyau fissile. Une capture est dite stérile dans le cas contraire. Par exemple 238 U conduit par capture neutronique à 239 Pu qui est fissile. C'est ainsi que 30 % de la puissance générée en REP provient des fissions de 239 Pu.
