Le 15 mars 1979, le pétrolier ravitailleur britannique Kurdistan, propriété de la Nile Steamship Co. Ltd. de Newcastle, en Angleterre, quitte Point Tupper (N.-É.) à destination de Québec, chargé de 29 662 tonnes de mazout brut. Alors qu'il se trouve à 50 milles marins au nord-est de Sydney, à l'île du Cap-Breton, le pétrolier est poussé par de grands vents dans des eaux envahies par les glaces; des fissures verticales apparaissent sous la ligne de flottaison dans les citernes latérales numéro 3, d'où le mazout commence rapidement à s'échapper.
