Les cyclothèmes ou séquences rythmiques à charbon montrent des variations progressives d'épaisseur dans leurs différents termes. Tour à tour, les grès, les colloïdes, les carbonates et le charbon présentent des épaississements au détriment des autres lithotopes. Il existe donc des variations d'un ordre supérieur, couvrant les cyclothèmes. Ce sont les mégacyclothèmes.
