La metadona es un opioide, es decir, un narcótico sintético de acción parecida a los opiáceos (morfina, etcétera), pero que no deriva del opio. Los adictos a la heroína son dependientes de opiáceos y sufren los síntomas de la abstinencia si la concentración de esta droga en sangre baja de cierto nivel. Una dosis apropiada de metadona reduce los síntomas de abstinencia. En el tratamiento mantenido con metadona, se induce la tolerancia a una dosis constante de metadona que es suficientemente alta para bloquear la acción narcótica y eufórica de los opiáceos.
