DEF

A roughly spheroidal concretion, generally of limestone or clay ironstone, cut into polyhedral blocks by radiating and intersecting cracks that have been filled (and the blocks cemented together) by veins of some material, generally calcite.

CONT

Great concretions, known as "septarian nodules," found in the Bad Lands of South Dakota contain up to 4-inch, fluorescent, transparent, amber-colored crystals in the cracks.

Nodule calcaire dans des couches argileuses, possédant des fentes de retrait remplies de cristaux de calcite ou éventuellement de quartz ou de gypse.

Les Terres noires, marneuses, de l'Oxfordien inférieur du Sud de la France abritent à certains niveaux des lits de concrétions marnocalcaires. Ces concrétions s'appellent des septarias. Ces nodules fendus de l'intérieur sont très recherchés par les minéralogistes et paléontologues amateurs pour les ammonites et divers minéraux qu'ils renferment. L'érosion fait apparaître ces nodules dans le tiers supérieur des affleurements qui abritent quelques uns de ces bancs.

Les concrétions calcaires se trouvent dans beaucoup de terrains sédimentaires, surtout les argiles et les marnes (nodules, miches, boulets, septaria), les sables et les loess (poupées).

OBS

septaria : Le genre de ce mot, en français, n'est pas vraiment défini : certains l'emploient au féminin, d'autres au masculin... pour certains il serait invariable en nombre, pour d'autres, non. C'est pourquoi il semble préférable de parler de nodules à septaria.

septaria : Le Grand dictionnaire Larousse encyclopédique et le Dictionnaire de géologie indiquent qu'en ce sens, ce terme est féminin. Lorsqu'il est masculin, ce terme désigne, selon le Larousse, un mollusque gastropode prosobranche. De plus, les mots étrangers entrés dans l'usage français, peu importe leur origine devraient suivre les règles du français, donc, au pluriel on dirait des «septarias» quoiqu'on trouve souvent des «septaria».
