Grande ville de l'Antiquité et capitale de différents royaumes. Née vers le XXIIIe siècle avant J.-C., elle connaît son apogée sous Hammourabi (1793-1750) et devient la capitale d'un vaste territoire correspondant à la Babylonie ou à la Mésopotamie. Vers le XVIIIe siècle avant J.-C., la ville devient le premier centre culturel de l'Orient. Par la suite, elle connaît des ères de grandeur et de décadence jusqu'à son saccage en 689 et 648 av. J.-C. Elle revit et atteint sa plus grande splendeur sous la dynastie «chaldéenne» (626-539). Son déclin va s'accentuant par la suite; à la fin de l'Antiquité, elle n'est plus connue que par l'activité religieuse des Juifs. 2, record 3, French, - Babylone
