The terms used for this notion vary, as authors often use the generic term "pearl net" to refer to the square-base net, which is the most common type of pearl net. The other type of pearl net is the round pearl net. Often, they seem to freely describe the notion in words that might not necessarily form a term, such as "square base pearl net" or "square shaped pearl net". Nevertheless, the term "square pearl net" is the most appropriate and the most recognized term to designate this notion.

If the challenger wins, he moves up to occupy the place held by the one he defeated. The defeated player takes the place in the ranking occupied by the player who challenged and defeated him.

After several contests with the winners moving up and losers moving down, the rankings will reflect the true strengths of the participants. The ladder tournament is best suited to long-term play (as in tennis) as a method of maintaining a continuous ranking of participants.

The pyramidal tract is a phylogenetically new tract, most prominent in man, and provides for direct cortical control and initiation of skilled movements, especially those related to speech and involving the hand and fingers.
