The term "even keel" is a nautical term used to describe a ship's position in the water. When a ship is on an even keel, it means that the draft of the vessel is equal fore and aft. In simpler terms, the ship's keel is parallel to the waterline, which allows the vessel to float or proceed in a smooth and level manner. An even keel is an essential aspect of safe navigation for any vessel. If a ship is not on an even keel, it can lead to listing, which is when the ship leans to one side or the other due to uneven weight distribution. 3, fiche 1, Anglais, - even%20keel

In evaluating the safety of food residues, the most appropriate NOAEL [no observed adverse effect level] is divided by a safety factor, usually of 100. This number may be lower or higher, depending on a number of factors considered in the hazard assessment, such as the type of effect observed. The resulting figure provides the acceptable daily intake-the amount of the pesticide that toxicologists consider safe for humans to consume each day for an entire lifetime. 2, fiche 2, Anglais, - safety%20factor

The concept of a safe biological limit has been developed and is being used increasingly in stock assessments to indicate the status of stocks. Stocks are considered to be within safe biological limits if the spawning stock biomass is above a precautionary value which is higher than the level at which recruitment is impaired and fishing mortality is below a precautionary value which is lower than that which would give rise to a high probability of recruitment failure. 1, fiche 3, Anglais, - safe%20biological%20limit

Although there are no scientifically proven minimum safe limits for concentrations of certain toxic and carcinogenic chemicals in food, air and water, such "safe limits" in fact have been set by the appropriate food and drug administrations or their equivalents. The implication is that a dose of low-level radiation with no acceptable safe level is more health-threatening than a low-level dose of, for example, dioxin. In fact, the Task Force finds it is more reasonable to accept a maximum permissible level for ionizing radiation because background radiation is a ubiquitous, naturally occurring phenomenon, whereas there is no naturally occurring level of polychlorinated biphenyls. 3, fiche 14, Anglais, - safe%20limit

With certain chemical toxins, particularly those which are synthetic, it is reasonable to think that zero concentrations in the body or in the environment are desirable, even if not easily achievable. The aim of the CSPA [Canadian Sport Parachuting Association] rigging program is to have a core group of dedicated individuals who have the knowledge, experience and personal integrity to act as parachute technicians within our sport, keeping the average skydiver's equipment safe and functional. Rigger certification requires, on the part of all candidates, an exhibited personal commitment to maintain a level of expertise and currency. This currency would include performing parachute-rigging activities for at least thirty(30) days within the previous 12 months or by demonstrating to the T&SC [Technical & Safety Committee] the ability to perform related rigging tasks. 1, fiche 16, Anglais, - rigger%20certification

Record number: 21, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Disposal is a permanent method of management in which there is no intention of retrieval and which, ideally, does not rely for its success on the continued need for institutional controls beyond a reasonable period of time. Disposal would be achieved when the wastes are sufficiently isolated by natural or engineered passive containment, or sufficiently reduced in concentration by radioactive decay or dispersal, that the residual risks to human beings and the environment are acceptable. 3, fiche 21, Anglais, - disposal
Record number: 21, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Permanent disposal means sequestering the wastes, until they have decayed to a safe level, away from the environment in a permanent facility requiring no monitoring, maintenance, or ongoing institutional controls.... One unfortunate aspect of the Board's adherence to this idea is the inhibiting effect it has on the search for simpler solutions, such as long-term storage, that concentrate on improved management of the wastes. 3, fiche 21, Anglais, - disposal
Record number: 21, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The debate essentially concerns the distinction between storage and disposal. "Storage" involves the retrievability, monitoring, and ongoing institutional control of wastes. It also includes active elements of waste management in such a waste facility (e.g., leachate collection and treatment). By contrast, the concept of disposal assumes that a waste management facility can be designed in such a way that there will be no need for such measures. 3, fiche 21, Anglais, - disposal

Wind Shields. SRGs are sometimes installed in locations where wind effects which reduce gage catch can not be reduced by site selection. In such cases, use of a wind shield may be advisable, particularly at stations subject to excessive snowfall. Two type of shields have had wide use in the United States. They are the Nipher Shield, a flared metal device that attaches to the precipitation gage, and the Alter type which consists of 32 free swinging galvanized metal leaves, or baffles, attached to a steel ring 4 feet in diameter and supported by 3 or 4 galvanized pipes. One of the quadrants of the Alter's ring is hinged to allow for easy, safe access to the gage. These shields can be used on the SRG or Recording Rain gages. The installed shield's leaves should extend 1/2 inch above the level plane of the orifice. 3, fiche 23, Anglais, - Nipher%20shield

Spatial Archive and Interchange Format(SAIF, pronounced safe) is a Canadian geomatics standard for the exchange of geographic data. The underlying model itself is devoid of geographic meaning; rather it deals with fundamental concepts from mathematics and computer science. SAIF uses an object oriented data model, and consists of definitions of the underlying building blocks, including tuples, sets, lists, enumerations, and primitives. It also includes the rules for defining higher level constructs, and the SAIF standard defines a base set of approximately 300 classes. These include such things as Points, Spatial Reference Systems, Map Projections, Arcs, and Polygons. 3, fiche 29, Anglais, - spatial%20archive%20and%20interchange%20format

The Spatial Archive and Interchange Format (SAIF) can be used as the basis of geospatial modeling, as well as for exchange and archival purposes. SAIF, a Canadian national standard, is also closely related to international efforts such as the openGIST initiative and the SQL Multimedia Spatial development. 4, fiche 29, Anglais, - spatial%20archive%20and%20interchange%20format

The Spatial Archive and Interchange Format (SAIF) features a powerful object-oriented data model described in an easy-to-use data definition language called Class Syntax Notation (CSN). SAIF is the standard archive and interchange format for geographic data in the province of British Columbia. SAIF was developed to address both data interchange and data archival issues. 5, fiche 29, Anglais, - spatial%20archive%20and%20interchange%20format

The mechanics of MEOR at a molecular level are really quite simple, but must be thoroughly understood to assess both the efficiency and the efficacy of the process. The microbes in MEOR are simply hydrocarbon-utilizing, non-pathogenic microorganisms which are endemic to, and are naturally-occurring in petroleum reservoirs. What this means is, they naturally exist in reservoirs, are safe for plants, animals and humans, and ingest hydrocarbons as a food source which they metabolize. As a result of this "digestive" process, they then excrete bio-products such as alcohols, gases, acids, surfactants and polymers, which because of their origin are all natural and non-toxic.... Changes in the Crude [:] The gases excreted by the microorganisms go immediately into solution in the crude, making it a solution gas drive reservoir once again. The gases, solvents and weak acids cause a reduction in the viscosity and the pour point of the crude, and an increase in its API(or specific) gravity. These three changes cause the oil to be thinner and to flow more freely. Some of the microorganisms inhibit the activity of SRB's, or sulfate-reducing bacteria, which also occur naturally in reservoirs, but cause corrosion in metal parts and produce the deadly H2S(hydrogen sulfide) gas. Changes in the Reservoir Rock [:] The surfactants, acids and solvents clean out the paraffin wax and the heavy crude depositions in the pores of the rock improving the permeability and partially restoring the original porosity of the rock. The polymers help modify the permeability of the rock by reducing the size of the molecules of reservoir fluids, and help prevent and control water-coning problems. The acids, solvents, alcohols and surfactants remove metal traces from the poral throats of the rock, helping to restore the original porosity and permeability of the reservoir rock. 3, fiche 33, Anglais, - microbial%20enhanced%20oil%20recovery

Wilde's theory is based on a cost-benefit model. He studied how people modify their hazard perception when safety systems are implemented. This process... states that people adjust their risk acceptance decision and their risk-taking behaviour towards their target level of perceived risk.

Biological effects of ionizing radiation.... at the upper end of the scale, there is no radiation exposure so high it will guarantee that every exposed individual will suffer the effect. Nor at the lower end is any exposure so low that it will carry no risk to anyone of inducing the effect. These radiation effects are therefore said to have "no threshold. "Logically, it follows that any exposure to radiation, no matter how small, carries some risk and that any reduction in exposure, even from an already very low level, confers some benefit. However, it is not always appreciated that the absence of a "safe" threshold is a theoretical assumption and a safety precaution rather than something that can be proven. It is also not well understood that the toxic effects of radiation, for which there is no defined safe level, may not differ fundamentally from those of some chemical toxins for which a "safe" level in the body or in the environment has been declared. 1, fiche 41, Anglais, - no%20threshold
Record number: 41, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Complicating the problem of public perceptions of the level of risk associated with radioactive wastes is the confusion induced by two fundamental principles of radio-biological and radiation protection theory. The first is the "no-threshold" hypothesis, and the second is the "as low as reasonably achievable, "or ALARA, principle. The first principle holds that there is no threshold below which exposure to radiation is entirely safe. The "no threshold" hypothesis-that any exposure to ionizing radiation, no matter how small, will increase the probability of a harmful consequence to an exposed individual-is an important scientific concept.... it is generally agreed that it is wise to err on the side of safety and work from the assumption that there is no safe level. 1, fiche 41, Anglais, - no%20threshold

1, fiche 43, Anglais, - minimum%20safe%20limit

Since the specified limit is for residual contamination, the use of swipes as a method of measurement may also lead to underestimating the true level of contamination, although it is useful for determining the amount of material which is readily removable at that time. Because of the above consideration, the recommended method of determining compliance with the criteria is through the use of a beta contamination monitor, properly calibrated for measuring the beta particles from natural uranium. If this instrument is used assuming that its entire response is due to beta radiation, any error will be in the safe direction. 1, fiche 48, Anglais, - beta%20contamination%20monitor

Polymers, because of their structure, additives or structure defects, can contain what are referred to as chromophor groups, which by absorbing UV-light can increase the electronic energy level of the polymer. The polymer in this situation can readily react further, for example, with oxygen(photo-oxidation). The higher scale energy of the polymer can be transferred to the quencher by adding energy quencher. The quenchers absorb the scale energy via energy transfers in the form of "safe" long wave rays(fluorescent, phosphorescent and heat rays) which does not promote any further photo-oxidation. 3, fiche 52, Anglais, - quencher
