Among many instruments to assess anxiety, one stands out : the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory(STAI, Spielberger, 1983). This does not mean that it is an ideal measure but it is the most frequently used scale in research world-wide, and no other measure has received as many foreign language adaptations and citations in the last three decades. Thus, it is the standard in the field. The self-report inventory consists of 20 items to assess state anxiety, and another 20 items to assess trait anxiety. These two parts differ in the item wording, in the response format(intensity vs. frequency), and in the instructions for how to respond. 3, fiche 6, Anglais, - Spielberger%20State%2DTrait%20Anxiety%20Inventory

Severe anxiety symptoms present themselves in a variety of ways. Before finding out the ways that this disease manifests itself, it is important for you to have a background on the causes of severe anxiety. In general, the main sources of severe anxiety are either an unresolved emotional trauma, which leads to what is commonly known as post-traumatic stress disorder. It can also be caused by emotional underdevelopment, which leads to the incapacity to deal with stress, or it could also be rooted in physiological causes such as hormonal imbalances. 2, fiche 8, Anglais, - severe%20anxiety

… social discontent is related less to people's individual situation and more to society as a whole. Put more scientifically, it can be asserted that social discontent is a latent feeling of anxiety among citizens concerning the precarious state of society. This feeling consists of a perceived deterioration of five aspects of that society :(i) a loss of confidence in human capabilities,(ii) a loss of ideology,(iii) a loss of political power,(iv) a loss of a sense of community, and(v) increasing socio-economic vulnerability. 1, fiche 12, Anglais, - social%20discontent

Such anxiety, itself a neurotic manifestation, is "basic" in two senses : first, it is the basis for neurosis.

SSRIs treat depression by increasing levels of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is one of the chemical messengers(neurotransmitters) that carry signals between brain nerve cells(neurons). SSRIs block the reabsorption(reuptake) of serotonin into neurons. This makes more serotonin available to improve transmission of messages between neurons. SSRIs are called selective because they mainly affect serotonin, not other neurotransmitters. SSRIs may also be used to treat conditions other than depression, such as anxiety disorders. 4, fiche 38, Anglais, - selective%20serotonin%20reuptake%20inhibitor
