The Métis Nation of Alberta(MNA), has adopted a model if governance which assumes full responsibility for the representation of the Métis people with the province of Alberta. Ancillary to this political representation, the MNA has also developed a strong governance infrastructure, which provides culturally sensitive services and programs to Alberta Métis at the regional and community level within urban and rural areas. The MNA is the oldest of the Governing Members within the Métis National Council. It finds its roots as far back as 1928 where a small group of Métis in the Frog Lake area of Northeastern Alberta began to meet and organize. This group led by Charles Delorme, established L'Association des Métis Alberta et les Territoires du Nord-Ouest. The political movement led to the incorporation of the Métis Association of Alberta(now Métis Nation of Alberta) in December of 1932 with a mandate to mobilize Alberta's land-less Métis.

Canadian federal and provincial government organizations have long been engaged in building and maintaining extensive collections of digital topographic mapping datasets, road network files and property mapping databases in support of their own respective mandates and obligations. Since 1996, a collection of these organizations has been instrumental in establishing and developing the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI) Initiative. Capacity-building and partnerships between different levels of government, industry and academia have been two of the hallmarks of the CGDI initiative.

The CGDI initiative has been supported since 1996 by the Inter-Agency Committee on Geomatics (IACG) and the Canadian Council on Geomatics (CCOG), and in 1999, the federal Cabinet expanded its support to this important national initiative.
