Arctic climatology involves the study of complex and dynamic land-ocean-atmosphere interactions across semipermanently frozen northern high-latitude environments. These areas, approximately confined within the polar cell(north of 60° N), comprise a vast portion of the semipermanent boreal cryosphere and are particularly sensitive to climatic fluctuations and changes at regional to global scales, phase variations in the local and remote modes of ocean-atmosphere variability, and transient weather patterns that transfer heat and moisture to and from the region. 1, fiche 1, Anglais, - Arctic%20climatology

Air continental polaire, cP. Or, ceci est peu fréquent l'hiver, puisque cet air a tendance à rester froid. 4, fiche 6, Français, - air%20continental%20polaire

Air masses are also classified as being either continental or maritime in terms of moisture characteristics. Combining these two categories, several possibilities are commonly found associated with North America : maritime polar(mP), continental polar(cP), maritime tropical(mT), continental tropical(cT), and continental arctic(A). 7, fiche 10, Anglais, - source%20region

Prefrontal(warm front) fogs occur in stable continental polar(cP) air masses when precipitating warm air overrides the colder air. The rain raises the dewpoint in the cP air mass sufficiently for fog formation. Generally, the wind speeds are light, and the area most conducive to the formation of this type of fog is one between a nearby secondary low and the primary low-pressure center. The northeastern area of the United States is probably the most prevalent region for this type of fog. Prefrontal fog is also of importance along the Gulf and Atlantic coastal plains, the Midwest, and in the valleys of the Appalachians.

Orbiting Geophysical Observatory(OGO), series of six orbiting observatories launched between 1964 and 1969 by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA) to study the earth's atmosphere, ionosphere, and magnetosphere and the solar wind. In order to provide global coverage, three of the satellites(OGO-2, OGO-4, and OGO-6) were launched into low polar orbits while the other three(OGO-1, OGO-3, and OGO-5) were placed in eccentric orbits ranging out as far as almost 92, 830 mi(150, 000 km). Each observatory carried 20-25 instruments, including cosmic ray detectors, counters, and telescopes, ionization chambers, Geiger counters, magnetometers, spectrometers, photometers, micrometeoroid detectors, and ion and electron traps. Among the significant achievements of the OGO program were the first observations of daytime auroras and of the protons responsible for the ring of electric current that surrounds the earth during magnetic storms, the collection of data showing the interaction of the solar wind with the earth's magnetosphere, and the verification of the existence of the plasmapause, the inner boundary of the region of trapped radiation in the magnetosphere. 2, fiche 13, Anglais, - Orbiting%20Geophysical%20Observatory

Depressions can be shown to follow a life cycle-from Embryo through Maturity to Decay. The embryo depression begins as a wave on the Polar Front. The collision between air masses forces the warmer air to rise-the rotation of the earth imparts a spiral movement to the rising air. The upward movement results in the creation of a Low pressure region on the earth's surface. More air is drawn in and rises, deepening the depression. 1, fiche 14, Anglais, - wave%20on%20the%20polar%20front

There are at least three distinct types of cold pool : 1. Large(in areal extent), slow-moving vortices at latitudes poleward of roughly 50deg N & S. They are often over, or immediately downwind of the source regions of polar or arctic air masses, in such areas as the Canadian Arctic or Siberian Russia.... 2. Once cold air from the source region as detailed in(1.) above is caught up in the circulation of mid-latitude depressions, the characteristics of the air mass are altered. Warming from below(over relatively warmer sea surfaces for example), leads to instability developing, and with an accompanying injection of moisture(after a reasonable length of passage over the sea), cloudy convection(showers, thunderstorms) is triggered. Cold pools in these situations are often maxima of such activity, with surface charts showing west or northwesterly airflow, often with cyclonically curved isobars. The cold pool will move in the general synoptic flow, and will eventually warm out(disappear) due to sensible & latent heat exchanges within the environment of the cold pool. However,... sometimes the cold pool will transform into a slow-moving, longer-lasting entity, particularly if the feed of ex-polar air on its western flank is maintained-this occurs in highly meridional situations. 3. A pool of cold air can also become ’detached’ at lower latitudes... 2, fiche 17, Anglais, - cold%20air%20pool

Particles in the surface region of a phase are subjected to orienting forces as a result of the anisotropic force field. Polar molecules(e. g. permanent dipoles) may thus be preferentially oriented in the surface region, while polarizable molecules may be polarized(induced dipoles). The array of oriented polar and/or polarized molecules is called the surface dipole layer with which an electric potential drop is associated, called the surface potential of the phase. 1, fiche 23, Anglais, - surface%20dipole%20layer
